Green Cars Are Coming

Published by van133 at 12:31 pm under Environmental Issues, automotive Edit This

If you’re thinking of buying a new car but are holding off until car manufacturers get hip to green technology, you may not need to wait much longer.  Several car manufacturers are testing electric cars and may market them soon.  Forget the hybrid.  These cars are totally electric, can drive at highway speeds, and look like real cars instead of like golf carts.  Both Mitsubishi Motors and Subaru are developing electric car models, but only Subaru has definite plans to market them in the
United States.

Subaru is currently fleet testing its R1E Mini-Car that gets up to 65 mph. and goes 50 miles on a single charge.  The R1E can be 80 percent charged in 15 minutes, and fully charged overnight using just a standard 110V household outlet.  Its lithium battery pack will last 10 years or 130,000 miles.  Subaru says the R1E will be available to the public starting in 2010.  Javlon Electric Motor Corporation, a division of Miles Automotive is also testing electric cars.  Its XM200 and XS500 models are full-sized and freeway drivable, with top speeds of 80 mph., and can get a range of 150 miles on a single charge.  Javlon plans to market the first of these, a Corolla-looking sedan, as early as the end of 2008.
